Inside My Sketch Book

The Tools I Use

I’m all about gouache, colored pencils, markers, and pencil—they’re my go-to for that hands-on, creative feel. But since it’s tricky to have all my art supplies ready all the time, especially for client projects, I usually stick to clean black-and-white sketches. Most of the time, you’ll find me using my iPad and Procreate, where I love using a dry brush to get that same natural, sketchy vibe digitally.

Digital Sketch Book

Before I had an iPad, my process was all about sketching with pencil and paper, then taking a photo to transfer it digitally for reference. Since using an iPad for almost a decade, my workflow has completely transformed—it’s so much faster to create clean sketches for clients and quickly move on to color. I love the ease of saving a clean JPEG right away. But there’s something magical about working traditionally that digital tools can’t replace, which is why I still love experimenting with mediums like gouache.

Traditional Sketchbook

There’s nothing quite like sketching with pencil and paper. After a lifetime of drawing this way, it always feels like home when I need a break from digital. I also love pulling out my gouache and pencils to create mixed media pieces. There’s just something magical about bringing ideas to life on paper and layering different mediums.

My favorite way to sketch is in a cozy spot, usually on my couch, surrounded by comfort—often with my dog snuggled up beside me and my daughter drawing alongside me. I love that we get to share these creative moments together; it’s such a joy to watch her explore her own creativity. Being able to set that example for her, showing that art can be both fun and fulfilling, is something I truly cherish. There’s something special about creating in a relaxed, family-filled space—it makes the process even more meaningful.
