Why Every Artist Deserves a Seat at the Table: Encouragement for Aspiring Surface Designers

If you’ve ever doubted your potential to make it as a surface designer, you’re not alone. When I first started sharing that I wanted to be a Surface Designer after working as a Graphic Designer at fortune 500 companies designing advertising campaigns, people told me that the surface design industry was oversaturated with artists and that I should stick with Graphic Design. I felt incredibly discouraged and overwhelmed with comparison. It wasn’t until I went to an event called Create & Cultivate in NYC where I received a coaster promoting Society6 which has a quote. “No one is you, that is your power” and it really has been my mantra ever since.

The world of art licensing and product design can feel intimidating, especially when you see others landing big-name deals or amassing large followings. But here’s the truth: every artist has something valuable to offer, and there’s room for you at the table, too. Let’s explore why your unique voice matters and how you can confidently take your place in the surface design industry.

1. Your Perspective Is Unique

No one else sees the world the way you do. Your experiences, inspirations, and artistic voice come together to create designs that only you can make. Retailers and brands are constantly looking for fresh, diverse perspectives to connect with their audiences.

  • Celebrate what makes your work distinct.

  • Embrace your personal story and infuse it into your designs.

  • Remember, the industry thrives on variety, and your unique perspective adds to that richness.

2. The Industry Needs New Voices

From big-box retailers to boutique brands, companies are always searching for designs that resonate with their customers. Trends evolve, tastes change, and new voices keep the industry vibrant and relevant. Your fresh ideas and creative energy could be exactly what a brand needs to stand out in a competitive market.

  • Don’t underestimate the power of your style, even if it feels unconventional.

  • The right client will appreciate your originality and see its potential.

3. Success Doesn’t Require Perfection

Many artists hold themselves back, believing they need to have the perfect portfolio, the perfect pitch, or the perfect social media presence before they can even try. The truth? Imperfect action beats perfect inaction every time.

  • Start where you are with what you have.

  • Build and refine as you go—growth happens through experience.

  • Don’t wait for permission to claim your seat.

4. Collaboration Over Competition

The art and design world can sometimes feel competitive, but there’s incredible power in collaboration. Other artists aren’t your rivals; they’re your peers, allies, and potential collaborators. The success of one artist doesn’t diminish your chances—it’s proof that opportunities are out there for everyone.

  • Join communities of surface designers to learn and grow together.

  • Share your journey and celebrate others’ wins.

  • Remember, collaboration can lead to unexpected opportunities.

5. Big Dreams Start Small

Every artist’s journey begins with a single step. Those whose designs grace the shelves of Target or Hallmark started somewhere, just like you. Small wins—a local licensing deal, a custom illustration project, or a featured piece in a boutique store—can snowball into big successes.

  • Celebrate each milestone, no matter how small.

  • Use each achievement as motivation to keep moving forward.

6. There’s Enough Room for Everyone

The surface design industry is expansive, with endless niches and opportunities. From home goods and apparel to stationery and giftware, there are countless ways to share your art with the world. Your designs don’t have to appeal to everyone—they just need to resonate with the right audience.

  • Focus on finding your niche and serving it well.

  • Trust that your ideal clients and collaborators are out there.

Final Thoughts

Every artist deserves a seat at the table, and that includes you. The surface design industry thrives on the creativity and individuality of its artists. You don’t need a massive following, years of experience, or perfect circumstances to start. You just need belief in your work and the courage to put it out into the world.

Take a deep breath, step into your creativity, and claim your seat. The table isn’t complete without your voice. Keep designing, keep dreaming, and know that your art matters more than you may realize.
